Hello students! A lot of English learners get confused about the wordsΒ food, dish, meal,Β andΒ cuisine.Β These all refer to the general topic of eating, but there are some important differences in how we use each one.
FOOD

FoodΒ is the most general word, referring toΒ anything you can eat. A banana is food. A hamburger is food. A salad is food. Simple things (like a piece of bread) and complex things (like a seafood stew with many ingredients) are all in the general category ofΒ food.Β In everyday English, youβll often hear sentences like:
Whatβs your favoriteΒ food?
Letβs go get someΒ food.
The wordΒ foodΒ isΒ usually singular β so you should say βI ate a lot ofΒ foodΒ (not foods) last night.β But there are some exceptions β we useΒ foods,Β plural, when specifically talking about multiple distinct types, for example, βAt the international festival, I triedΒ foodsΒ from around the world.β
DISH

The wordΒ dishΒ has two meanings. One is a physical object used to hold, cook, and serve food. When we talk aboutΒ washing the dishes, we are washing the plates, bowls, pots, pans, spoons, forks, etc.
The wordΒ dishΒ can also refer to one prepared item of food, like aΒ lasagna or a fruit salad.Β If you go to a type of social event called a potluck, each person who attends brings a dish β one person brings a salad, another person brings an apple pie, another person brings beef stew, etc. Each of these prepared items of food is aΒ dish.
At a restaurant, you might encounter the termsΒ main dishΒ (a large amount of food β like a steak)Β andΒ side dishΒ (a small amount of food that accompanies the main dish β like a small bowl of broccoli).
MEAL

The wordΒ mealΒ refers to the customary time/occasion of eating food. Most people eat 3 meals β breakfast, lunch, and dinner.Β MealΒ also refers to all the food eaten during one of these occasions β so one meal can include multipleΒ dishes. Dinner is one meal, but you might have chicken, rice, salad, and ice cream. Each of those is oneΒ dish, and when eaten all together on one occasion, they are aΒ meal.
A meal may include many dishes.
You might have aΒ big/heavy mealΒ (with a lot of food) or aΒ light mealΒ (with little food). A meal can beΒ elaborateΒ (with many different and complicated dishes) orΒ simpleΒ (with just a few easy-to-make dishes).
CUISINE

The wordΒ cuisineΒ describesΒ a typical manner/style of preparing food. We usually use this word with with country adjectives (Italian cuisine, Brazilian cuisine, Moroccan cuisine) or ethnic or regional adjectives (Cajun cuisine, Jewish cuisine, South Indian cuisine). In everyday English, however, many people simply say βfoodβ when talking about getting something to eat:
I loveΒ Chinese food.
Do you want to try someΒ EthiopianΒ food?
When talking more specifically about the techniques and traditions, then we would sayΒ cuisine:
Palm oil is used prominently in West AfricanΒ cuisine.
The chef specializes in FrenchΒ cuisine.
